Tonight is Bonfire Night (Valborgsmässoafton) here in Sweden and it’s a pretty big deal here. We celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring (and if you live or have lived this far north you’ll understand why we celebrate this). People gather all the dead leaves and twigs and other combustible things that appear after the snow has melted, put it all in a big pile and then people usually march from the town square to the bonfire carrying torches and then collectively light it. There’s usually a Spring Speech and some singing going on, and where I grew up we always had fire works to end the evening. Then I got a bit older and we also had alcohol after the fireworks even though we weren’t supposed to but who cared? It’s also our King’s birthday.
